Former Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim apologized to teammate on Tuesday after an angry confrontation during a Twenty20 tournament. The 33-year-old goalkeeper turned to Nasum Ahmed after the two nearly collided during a catch. Mushfiqur caught the catch, but then feared as if to throw the ball to Nasum, or give a blow. He faced a storm of criticism on social media for his behavior during the Bangabandhu Twenty20 Cup game between his side of Beximco Dhaka and Fortune Barishal.

Bangladesh’s most limited player was fined by the match referee after the game.

“First of all … I would like to apologize to all my fans and spectators for the event that took place yesterday,” Musfifiur wrote on his Facebook page.

“I apologized after the game to my teammate Nasum.

“I am a man above all and the gesture I showed was not acceptable. I promise it will not be repeated.”

The poster was accompanied by a photo of Mushfiq and Nasum.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board fined Mushfiquro a quarter of his match fee.

“We considered his story to be good,” said match referee Roqibul Hasan, “but he was warned that if the action is repeated, he will have problems,” he said.

Beximco Dhaka won the game by nine runs to qualify for the December 18 final of the tournament.
