  • Rahane did not respond to a team call for a day-night test
  • He said that the decision will be taken on the eve of the team match
  • The first Test against Australia from December 1

Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane admitted on Tuesday that his side would beat pacer Ishant Sharma, but did not answer questions about the team’s composition in the day-night Test against Australia starting on Thursday.

With captain Virat Kohli returning home on paternity leave after the first Test, Rahane’s captaincy in the remaining three Tests is almost certain. He also spoke about the challenges faced by the pink bowlers.

Rahane said at the virtual press conference, ‘We have a tough attack, but we will miss Ishant. He is the senior fastest bowler. Ishant was injured in the tax rib during the IPL.

Jasani, on the other hand, expressed confidence that the fast bowlers led by Jaspreet Bumrah and Mohammad Shami would perform well in the absence of Ishant. He said, ‘Umesh, Saini, Siraj, Bumrah and Shami are all good bowlers and they also have experience. They know how to put it here.

He said, ‘This is a new series, which will start with the pink ball. Getting rhythm is important. I believe our bowlers can take 20 wickets.

Asked about the opening pair, Rahane said it would be decided on the eve of the match. India have the option of Mayank Agrawal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubhaman Gill and KL Rahul. For wicketkeeping at the same time there are options of Shav Pant and Wriddhiman Sah.

Rahane said, ‘The decision on the composition of the team has not been made. We will have a meeting on Wednesday and then another day and practice session. This will be discussed. Everyone is equally talented and everyone has the ability to win games for us. It’s a matter of trusting the player.

He did not give a definite answer as to what the role of senior spinner R Ashwin will be, but said his all-round skill would be put to great use in the first Test.

He said, ‘Ashwin’s role is very important. He is an experienced bowler and he has diversity. The role of his sacrificial bowler and batsman is very important.

On the day of the test with the pink ball, the session is very important and there is a lot of preparation going on. Rahane said that the speed of the ball is very fast in 400 to 40 minutes. He said, ‘The speed of the new pink ball is very fast at sunset. In this case, it is difficult to pay attention to the batsman.
