New Zealand versatile Colin de Grandhomme was excluded from the next examination series against Pakistan. Head coach Gary Stead confirmed that de Grandhomme has a “tight reaction” in his right foot and is still not quite ready for running, let alone bowling.

“We still couldn’t get him back to running and then obviously bowling as well,” Stead said. “Looks forward to a mid-January return.”

The plan for Kane Williamson is to join the squad ahead of the second T20I against Pakistan, but it all depends on when his first child arrives.

“There’s no update on baby news, so we’ll let them continue like this,” Stead said. “… a plan is still at this stage that he will join the team for T20’s two and three.”

The news of Ajaz Patel’s injuries is positive. The spinner, who missed the two Tests against the Caribbean Islands, will join the New Zealand “A” squad in Whangarei to test his upper back.

Scan results for Lockie Ferguson are expected. The fast bowler complained of back pain after the T20I series against the Caribbean Islands and could be ruled out of action for the rest of the season.
