NEW DELHI: Congress on Tuesday paid tribute to India’s first deputy prime minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his death anniversary, with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stressed the importance of remembering their principles at a time when farmers are protesting against the new land laws.
Patel, a freedom fighter who also became India’s first domestic minister, deserves to unite hundreds of princely states to the Union of India after independence through a mix of persuasion, dialogue and even use of force when necessary.
“On the day of his death, we solemnly pay tribute to Indian Sardar, the man behind a united India, Shri Vallabhbhai Patel, ”Congress said via its official Twitter handle.
“As a courageous freedom fighter and first vice president of the nation, his countless contributions to nation building inspire countless Indians even today,” the party said.
In a Facebook post in Hindi, Rahul Gandhi shared Patel’s quote that “my only wish is for India to be a good producer and no one in this country to shed tears while being hungry”.
“Tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his death anniversary. Today, when ‘annadaatas’ (food suppliers) themselves shed tears, we must reflect on the principles of Sardar Patel,” said Rahul Gandhi.
In his tribute to Patel, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said in a tweet in Hindi, “The British threatened the farmers of Bardoli with things like property, but under the leadership of Sardar Patel, the farmers did not withdraw and their Satyagraha won. ”

“On the day of Sardar Patel’s death today, it is necessary to tell this government that farmers are not afraid of false propaganda and threats,” she said.
Several other congressional leaders, including Chief Representative Randeep Surjewala, Prime Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot, Abhishek Singhvi and Pilot Sachin, also paid rich tributes to Patel.
