Attorney General William Barr, who recently publicly disagreed with President Donald Trump over allegations of election fraud in the Nov. 3 presidential election, has resigned.
Trump has appointed his deputy Jeff Rosen as the Acting Attorney General.
“I just had a very nice meeting with Attorney General Bill Barr at the White House. Our relationship was very good, he did an outstanding job! According to a letter, Bill will be leaving right before Christmas to spend the holidays with his family …,” Trump announced on twitter Monday evening.
“Attorney General Jeff Rosen, a prominent person, will become interim Attorney General. Highly respected Richard Donoghue will take over as Deputy Attorney General. Thank you all!” Trump said as he tweeted Barr’s two-page resignation letter.
Barr, in his letter, said, “As discussed, I will spend the next week finishing a few remaining matters important to the administration, and leave on December 23.”
“I am very honored that you have called me to serve your administration and the American people again as attorney general. I am proud to have played a role in the many successes and unprecedented achievements you have given to the American people. Your record is all the more historic, because you fulfilled it in the face of relentless irreconcilable resistance, ”he added.
Democratic Congressman David Cicilline claimed Barr helped and incited Trump’s attacks on the U.S. election.
“He has done incalculable damage to our democracy. He will not miss him,” tweeted Cicilino.
Congressman Adam Schiff, Speaker of the House Armed Services Chamber, claimed Barr lied to protect Trump.
“Launched political investigations. Undermined justice and rule of law. And furiously suppressed protesters. So good release. Now work must begin to restore a credible and independent justice system. “
